Once in their speeder again, they followed a company security vehicle around the headquarters complex to the flight line. The security man pointed at a small building near the operations tower where they could park. On the short ride over, Monica grilled Sims.

“What did Phillipe mean when he said, ‘legionnaire’? You never said you were military, much less that you were in the Legion.”

Sims had it covered. “We’re not. We just look that way to some people in our armor. We work as technical consultants. It’s mainly fixing gizmos and stuff. It’s just that we have to do our jobs in dangerous places sometimes. All this is just for protection.”

She considered his explanation. “Well, that’s what I thought. I’m glad. You know, the company is always hiring. We’re going to need more help with the resettlements and farms. I’m sure we could use people with Q expertise. I could put a word in with Phillipe?”

Kel took over. “That’s very kind, Monica. We’re on contract for another six months to the Republic Embassy. It wouldn’t look very good if we reneged on a contract. That wouldn’t impress anyone wanting to hire us.”

Monica seemed ready to let it go. “Well, just think about it.”

The trans-orbital hopper sat on the flight line. It was not as sexy as a Talon, but was slightly larger, built primarily for transporting passengers to the orbital station and back. Monica told them that the crews worked twelve-hour shifts, three to four days at a time, before getting a three- to four-day rest period planetside. It sounded like the workers had a very accommodating schedule. He’d often heard that work outside of the core paid well. Plenty of days off combined with a lot of credits for your work were an attractive incentive, even to core-worlders.

In the executive flight lounge, an attendant stood at a counter awaiting their arrival. Behind her, a luxurious sitting area surrounded by holo projections on the walls beckoned. Kel caught the scent and saw trays topped with snacks and kaff.

“Miss Andrada and company? Please come with me. We have a vac suit ready for you, ma’am. It will only take a minute to fit you. You won’t need to wear the helmet except in a few sections of Sumendi Station where the actual processing is done, but it’s a good idea to have it with you at all times. Will you gentlemen be needing... I guess not. Am I right that you’re wearing combat armor? That’s vac rated, isn’t it?” the young woman said, with a lilt in her voice.

“Yes, that’s correct,” Kel said, impressed. “Have you seen combat armor before?”

“I have. I was in the Republic Navy as a Talon crew chief before I came to work for Solar Wind. I’ve seen it once or twice. Say...”

Kel didn’t let her ask her question. “We’d better get Miss Andrada buttoned up, don’t you think? Do you have any Three-V to give her? She gets space sick.”

“Oh, thank you for reminding me,” Monica said. “Do you have something I can take?”

“Of course, ma’am.
